Health & safety guidelines
Before your appointment
Getting tattooed can be really difficult on your body and temporarily lower your immune system.
While everyone has their own individual pre-tattoo ritual there are some universal things you can do which can be very helpful.
For about one week before a tattoo we recommend avoiding long exposure to the sun. Sun burns can be very dangerous to the skin and cannot be tattooed.
Dry or cracked skin is very difficult to tattoo and may cause difficulties during healing. It is helpful to apply lotion to the area you’re planning on getting tattooed at least once a day for at least 5 days leading up to the day of your appointment.
It is best to avoid alcohol at least 24 hours prior to your appointment. Alcohol is a blood thinner and can cause excessive bleeding during the tattoo process. It can also lower your pain tolerance which can affect your comfort during the tattoo.
The morning of your appointment it is recommended to eat a large breakfast that is high in carbohydrates. It will help keep your blood sugar up while getting tattooed and helps regulate the nervous system.
Finally, I recommend bringing any sugar drinks and snacks you’d like to have with you during your appointment. You’re also welcome to bring a blanket, stuffed animal, fidget toy, headphones or any other items that will allow you to be as comfortable as possible.
During your appointment
Swallowtail Tattoo requires masks in order to be tattooed. We strongly value and respect the well being of our clients, families and community members. Masking helps curb the spread of various diseases and helps maintain a clean environment during the tattoo.
You’re not feeling the design? No worries! We’re always happy to make any changes you’d like during the appointment. Not excited about the stencil placement? Not a problem! We can move it as many times as you’d like. (Pssst… you’re supposed to feel excited and comfortable when you’re getting tattooed! You’re the boss, I’m just here to make some cool art)
Our artists will always strive to give you the tattoo of your dreams. Of course we will offer our professional opinion as it pertains to the longevity of your tattoo, but getting tattooed is a collaborative effort which means your opinion matters as well! Our job is to give you the information and offer you the opportunity to make your own decisions.
